
MSU students suspend rally
An assurance of justice to two suspended students by the chief warden of M S University hostel thwarted a protest rally planned by the Hostel Students8217; Struggle Committee on Tuesday. The organisation, representing inmates of several university hostels, took heed of the assurance that 8220;justice will be done keeping in mind the academic careers8221; of the two students suspended recently.
Absconder
The district supply office declared Kalyansinh Raolji, an owner of a Karjan petrol pump, as an absconder here on Tuesday after he failed to respond to repeated inquiries of the DSO following a raid on his pump two months ago. If Raolji did not present himself before the DSO, his property would be attached, an official said.
Honour for MSU
Sarita Gupta of M S University8217;s Biochemistry department has been selected under the Faculty Exchange programme as Exchange Visitor to the Department of Biochemistry, State University of New York in Buffalo. She will conduct research in Cell Biology and Molecular Biology for three months. Gupta will leave for Buffalo on September 1.
Celebration
The VMC celebrated Local Self-Government Day on Tuesday in memory of C D Barfiwala, a barrister who dedicated his life to the cause. The national flag was hoisted in the lawns of the VMC building. The All-India Institute of Local Self Government also celebrated the day at its Nehrubhavan premises.
Touts held
The checking squads of Western Railways nabbed two touts during a special drive last week. Travelling Ticket Examiner R K Purohit caught Anand Dipakbhai Shah, resident of D/2, Mayur Park Society, Ahmedabad, who was prosecuted in Court No 5 at Ahmedabad station. Vasant Dalla, who was found selling tickets unauthorisedly at the Surat station, was prosecuted by Vadodara8217;s travelling ticket inspector in the court of Railway Magistrate, Surat, who imposed a fine of Rs 500, and announced a 20-day jail term.
Village bandh
Surat: GOdadra village, on the outskirts of the city, observed a bandh today to protest against the8220; inefficient politicians8217; inability8221; to provide them basic amenities. The villagers, who are demanding road, drainage and potable water, have threatened that to boycott the election if they do not get concrete assurance before September 4.
