
Corruption case dismissed
A special judge on Monday dismissed a corruption case against Chandresh Yagnik, former depot manager of the State Transport, Vadodara, on the grounds of insufficient evidence. Yagnik had been allegedly caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau last year while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000. The judge observed that the witnesses8217; statements were inconsistent and unreliable and could not be a basis for conviction. The court also said that mere recovery of money was not sufficient grounds for conviction in bribery cases.
Congress nominee
The Congress candidate for the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat was not announced till the time of going to press on Monday. Though Urmilaben Patel was reported to have got the final nod, no official statement was forthcoming. Meanwhile, Vadodara Dairy chairman and Vadodara District Cooperative Bank director Upendrasinh Gohil said he would contest the polls as an NCP candidate. He will file his papers on Wednesday.
Birth anniversary
Arvind Society organised a function to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maharishi Arvind at Rashtriya Smarak here on Sunday. An official spokesman said large numbers of devotees attended the function, and paid obeisance to the smarak. The function is organised every year.
Workshop
The Vadodara chapter of the Indian Geotechnical Society and the Civil Engineering Alumni Association organised a weekend workshop on instrumentation, which was attended by, among others, Indian Geotech Society Vadodara chapter president A V Shroff.
Freedom-fighters
A programme to pay homage to two freedom-fighters of the city has been organised by the Baroda University Staff Association on Wednesday.
