(AP Photo) Protesters in Denmark and Greenland demonstrated against US President Donald Trump’s demand to take over the control of self-governing territory and that the Arctic island cedes to America. The protesters lashed out at the Trump administration and called for it to be left to determine its own future.
During the protests, caps reading “Make America Go Away” could be seen which were parodying Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. A weekend demonstration also took place in the Danish capital in freezing weather. European nations last week sent military personnel to the island at Denmark’s request.

Demonstrators said “Greenland is not for sale” and chanted slogans such as “No means No” and “Hands off Greenland” in the capital city of Copenhagen as they marched to the US embassy with the territory’s red-and-white flag. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen led the protest march in the capital city of Nuuk with similar banners and proceeded to US consulate chanting “Kalaallit Nunaat” – the island’s name in Greenlandic.
A 76-year-old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore the red coloured cap with “Make America Go Away” lines, said “I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States.”
Trump has threatened to impose a 10% tariff on European countries, namely Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland from February 1 onwards and that the tariffs would increase to 25% from June if the countries do not agree to a US takeover of Greenland.
The countries threatened by Trump with tariffs recently sent their military to Greenland. Denmark has warned that US military intervention in Greenland would lead to the end of NATO, a western military alliance. When asked by reporters whether the US president would follow through on the tariff threat, he replied, “I will 100%.”
