
VADODARA, Sept 30: Two persons were arrested late on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of Gujarat Electricity Board executive engineer R V Shah at Rajpipla on September 20. While Bharat Rajnikant Dhobi is a junior assistant in the GEB8217;s accounts department, the other person arrested 8212; his brother Deen Dayal Rajnikant Dhobi 8212; runs a laundry service in Rajpipla.
Narmada District Superintendent of Police Raju Bhargava told Express Newsline on Thursday that GEB personnel had raided the laundry and the residence of Dhobi and his relatives on August 18 following complaints of electricity meter-tampering. The Dhobis were asked to pay Rs 1.58 lakhs in fine for power theft.
GEB inquiries later revealed that four meter-readers had connived with the Dhobis in the power-theft; Bharat Dhobi and the meter-readers were chargesheeted on September 6 and suspended on September 14. The power connection to the laundry and the Dhobi residences was cut off on September 18. Bhargava said that on September 20, Dayal Dhobi reportedly threatened a few junior engineers for their temerity in raiding his house, suspending five people and disconnecting the supply. Shah was murdered the same day at 2.10 pm, while he was having lunch with two colleagues.
Though Bharat Dhobi and the four meter-readers were transferred to Jambusar after being suspended, and Dhobi has denied being in Rajpipla on the day of the murder, the police said they were seeking their remand to further the investigation.
