NEW DELHI, May 19: Mahesh Kumar, an undertrial at Tihar jail, died on Monday. The exact cause of his death, however, is not known yet. According to sources at the jail, Kumar was brought to Tihar six days ago. He had been arrested by the Kotwali police for illegal possession of arms under the Arms Act.

A resident of Bagichi Madhodas located near the Red Fort, Kumar had been kept under trial in jail No 2. He allegedly consumed liquor regularly and had a weak constitution. Sources add when Kumar’s condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the jail hospital located within the premises of Tihar. When his condition did not improve he was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The area sub-divisional magistrate is holding an inquiry to ascertain the cause of death. According to jail authorities, the reason for Kumar’s death cannot be ascertained until they receive the post-mortem report. Area police officials claim that there were no injury marks on the body of the undertrial.
