Meghalaya’s licence to trade
Non-tribal entrepreneurs in Meghalaya will now have to obtain special trade licences to conduct business. This was announced by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council which has also said it will screen applicants to identify ‘‘genuine’’ non-tribal residents of the state.
Meghalaya, like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, are exclusively tribal states where acquisition or transfer of immovable property by non-tribal people is restricted under the Sixth Schedule.
Double agri credit: Nagaland
THE Nagaland government wants the credit flow to the state’s agriculture sector to double in the next three years. This would go a long way in helping the people, most of whom are solely dependent on agriculture.
Last week, chief minister Neiphiu Rio asked bankers, government officials and NGOs to create a banking culture in the state.
The credit-deposit ratio in the state is only 17.65 against the desired level of 60.
New visa rules for Bangladesh
TRIPURA last week found new reasons to feel happy. Bangladesh has announced its decision to grant double entry and exit visas to Indian tourists, a long pending demand of the Tripura government.
India has reciprocated the gesture by agreeing to extend the same facilities for both road and air travel. It will help people from Agartala travel to Kolkata through Dhaka and return by the same route.
With this, road travel time between Agartala and Kolkata, currently more than 56 hours via Guwahati, will come down to just 12 hours.
Sikkim to sell off sick units
Unable to run them any more, Sikkim has decided to soon dispose off all its sick public sector undertakings. The first in the list is the once profit-making Sikkim Fruit Preservation Factory. It already has buyers queuing up.
The list of units that have been identified also include several tourist lodges at Gangtok and a flour mill outside the state capital.
