Three members of the Bajrang Dal were arrested on Monday after they allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old medical student in the Nikol area of Ahmedabad, police said.

Police identified the arrested accused as Baba Goswami, Jeetu Chauhan and Vishal Rajput. Inspector V S Vaghela of Nikol police station confirmed they are associated with Bajrang Dal. Two others – Ravindra Rajput, Sahil Bhadoriya – and three other unidentified persons were also booked for voluntarily causing hurt, intentionally causing hurt with dangerous weapons, unlawful assembly, rioting, obscene acts and songs, and criminal intimidation, in an FIR registered on the basis of a complaint by the MBBS student, Aymas Ali Mohammad Akram Shaikh.

The FIR stated that the complainant and his friend had gone to a garage near Viratnagar bridge in Nikol area, to pick up the friend’s vehicle that was given for repair work. While they were waiting for the closed shop to open, a group of 7-8 people walked up to them, slapped them across the face and asked them the reason for sitting there, the FIR says. They then took the complainant’s phone, checked it and then again began slapping and thrashing them, after which he and his friend tried to escape from the spot.

The FIR said that one of them called the 112 police helpline. When a police team arrived, the complainant showed the police the place where the incident took place. Soon after, members of the group accosted them again and allegedly hit the complainant on the head with a stick. When another friend of his arrived, all three of them were beaten up by the accused persons, the FIR says. It also alleges that the accused threatened to kill them. Another friend of the complainant reached the spot and took them to a hospital where Shaikh gave his complaint to the police.

Inspector Vaghela said, “The complainant and his friend were sitting on their two-wheeler and the accused persons, some of whom are Bajrang Dal workers, arrived and an altercation turned into a fight.”

A cross complaint was filed by the Bajrang Dal members against two members of the other group and a non-cognizable case was registered against them, said Vaghela.
