Nirmala C H, assistant teacher of Symga English High School, Surat, has been awarded the prestigious CCRT Teacher’s award, 1996. The award was given by President K R Narayanan on June 29 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Ten teachers from different states were also awarded on the occasion.

Dissertation prize
Hutoxi Wadia, former lecturer of the English department of the South Gujarat University, has been awarded this year’s American Studies Research Centre (ASRC) Dissertation prize for his Ph D thesis. The prize is awarded for the best thesis submitted to an Indian university on a subject which wholly or partially relates to American Studies. Wadia worked under the supervision of professor Anjana Desai, former head of the English Department.

SEC praised
The Gujarat Electricity Board, Jamnagar has praised the Surat Electricity Company for the services it rendered in cyclone-hit areas of the State. The SEC had despatched two teams comprising four engineers, 38 experience technicians, and four vehicles on June 16 to the affected areas. The SEC team also helped the GEB restore power in the affected areas.

Applications
The Ministry of Welfare and Gujarat state’s Employment Department have invited applications from individuals and institutions for the national and state award 1998 for employing handicapped people. Free application forms are available at the employment exchange till July 10. Applicants should along with photographs enclose a certificate showing more than 40 per cent phisical disability. The forms, are to be addressed to the additonal employment director, and should be submitted latest by July 15, 1998 according to a circular issued here.
