
Rly constable foils train robbery, to be rewarded
NAGPUR: Government Railway Police constable Ajay Chakole from Manmad, on his way here for poll duty, foiled an attempt by robbers to loot at knife-point some passengers of S-3 coach of Vidarbha Express last Sunday by using his karate skill. The light built policeman floored two of the robbers using karate chops while the third jumped out of the train and escaped, GRP sources said, adding that he was due for an award of Rs 2000 for his daring deed.
One more held for maiming doctor
ITANAGAR: Tai Takanag, one of accused in the attack on noted ENT specialist Dr Zaman, was arrested from Doimukh near here on Saturday last, 27 days after the incident. With this arrest, the total number of arrests has gone up to three. Another accused Tame Hasi was still absconding. Two accused, Tamchi Mabo and Bameng Senkio were arrested within hours of the barbaric incident.
8 BSF jawans hurt in road mishap
KALYANI WB: At least 12 persons, includingeight BSF jawans, were injured, when a truck carrying them collided head on with a private bus at Talikhola under Amdanga police station in North 24 Parganas district early on Tuesday, BSF sources. The BSF personnel, who belonged to the 44 battalion, Digberia, were admitted to hospital where the condition of three jawans was said to be critical.
Two killed as insurgents clash
AGARTALA: Two insurgents of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura were gunned down on Tuesday by members of the banned All Tripura Tiger Force in West Tripura district, police said. A group of ATTF insurgents, armed with sophisticated weapons, raided a temporary hideout of NLFT at Rabi Sardar Para, a tribal hamlet under Jirania police station of the district and gunned down two ultras.
Tea executive8217;s body returned
CALCUTTA: The body of Rajat Banerjee 36, assistant manager of Pathemara tea estate in Cachar district in Assam was flown in here from Silchar today.Banerjee was abducted on August 21 and hisbullet-ridden body was recovered at Khanlampunji in Cachar district. Airport sources said that the body was handed over to Banerjee8217;s relatives at the airport.
Bengal floods hit over 1 lakh people
MALDA WB: Over 1,20,000 people of Malda and north Dinajpur districts in North Bengal have been affected in flash floods following heavy rains during the past few days, official sources said on Tuesday. In Malda 110 villages were submerged by Ganga, Mahananda and Fulahar rivers affecting over 60,000 people.
