Gandhinagar, July 28: Gujarat has retained its first position in the country for the implementation of the 20-point programme for the year 1998-99, with the State having put up an impressive performance in achieving the targets set under the Centre-sponsored programme.

A report released by the Union Planning and Programme Implementation Ministry containing details of the inter-State comparison of the performance was discussed at the State Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.

Briefing newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel said Gujarat had maintained its first rank for the third consecutive year for the implementation of the 20-point programme, as against its lower positions in the previous years since 1990-91.

As compared to other States, Gujarat had achieved over 100 per cent target in the implementation of various programmes during 1998-99, barring one in which only 90 per cent of the target could be achieved.

They included Jawahar Rozgar Yojana 111 , distribution of surplus land 90 , villages covered under drinking water programme 100 , child health 104 , financial assistance to SC and ST families 123 and 133 , housing for weaker sections 100 , housing for lower income group 100 , basic amenities for slums 248 , tree plantation on private lands 101 , energisation of wells 114 , improvised chulhas 108 and setting up of biogas plants 101 .
