
MUMBAI, AUG 17: The State Government has notified the list of 135 raw and packing materials and 150 products required for or manufactured by the Information Technology industry, which were granted concessional rate of 4 per cent Sales Tax. The new rates will be effective from August 15.
Announcing this here, Finance Minister Jayant Patil said the list of notified items includes the inputs on which the manufacturers are given set-off under the Bombay Sales Tax Act, to ensure that the tax on them is not built into the cost of the final product.
The list published by the government is in addition to 206 items notified for uniform sales tax rate all over the country, Patil said.
The local producers of raw materials will receive a boost as they will be able to compete with manufacturers situated in other states, he added.
The government has also notified the list of 150 specific products or items required for the IT industry. The list was prepared to avoid the electronic manufacturers from availing the benefit of Sales Tax concessions showing their products as IT items, Patil said. The new list has been issued by the Central IT Department and adopted by the state government in its original form, he added.
The adoption of Uniform Sales Tax rates system will affect the state8217;s revenue upto certain extent but will prove beneficial in the long run, he opined.
Patil also said the Sales Tax collection of the state for the four months between April to June had shown 31 per cent increase over the collection during the same period last year. The collection of Sales Tax is Rs 4,199 crore while the same during the last year was Rs 3,197 crore. The state government has set a target of Rs 13,300 crore for collection of Sales Tax in the current financial year, he said.
