Independence Cup Chess to feature top players

Most of the top Indian players, including two Grandmasters and International Masters, are expected to participate in the Independence Cup All-India Chess Tournaments which will be held from November 28 to Dec 31.

There are two tournaments, the Rapid from November 28 to 30 and the Classical tournament. Both will be of 11 rounds. The winner will get Rs 51,000 and the first 51 places win cash awards. The tournament will be conducted by the Challenger Chess Academy. The tournament is in aid of Operation Blood Flood, a donation drive.

Little Masters Squash tournament

The Little Masters Junior Indian Open Squash Tourney will have some international names when the event is held from October 21 to 24. The tournament, sponsored by WMI cranes, will have six events 8212; the under-14, under-16 and under-19 in boys and girls. Entries should beaddressed to the secretary general, Squash Rackets Federation of India through the Squash Rackets Association of Maharashtra.

Mumbai Varsity kabaddi teams

n THE Mumbai University kabaddi team will participate in the Inter-Varsity tournament for men from October 12 at Saradar Krushiangar, Gujarat, while the women8217;s team will be playing the all-India tournament at Calicut from October 1 to 5.

Teams: Men: Manoj Namsale Kirti, Paresh Chavan, Gurunath Gawade, Tanaji Karade, Diwakar Patil Dayanand, Vishal Dalvi Dr. Ambedkar, Ranjit Barve, Deven Velanju, Nilesh Shelar Kirti, SS Sangare Gogate, Mayur Deshmukh Joshi-Bedekar, Sachin patil Mahatma.

Badminton selection trials

The MumbaiUniversity has invited 11 players, including four girls, to participate in the selection trials to pick the team for the Inter-Varsity Badminton Tournament to be held at Pune from October 10 to 14. The selections trials will be held on October 5 at 8.45 am at the University Pavilion.

The players: Bhushan Paitankar, Amogh Kulkarni, Mitesh Hajarnis Joshi Bedekar; Behzad Devadwala HR Commerce; Jayesh Dhuri Jhunjhunwala; Rohan Radhakrishnan Podar; Harshad Tawade Sydenham.

Girls: Sim Sim Salaria, Kajal Puri Mithibai; Pooja Kotwani HR Commerce; Amita Shilwant SIES.

Swimming team for Inter-university

The Mumbai team for the Inter-University swimming championships, to be held at Chandigarh from October 27 to 31 has been announced.

The team: Radhika Shroff St. Xavier; Shane Pedder, Aditya Shroff HR Commerce; Tejas Pathare Ruparel; Atish Mantri Kirti; Javed Naik Podar.
