A climate expert at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has warned the public and the farmers against the freezing winter, suggesting that the weather is expected to become harsher in the next few days.
Sharing the observations, Dr PK Khingra, head, Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, PAU, said that the day and night time temperatures have been recorded below normal for the past few days in the state and the minimum temperature has dropped below 4 degrees Celsius at many locations. As per the India Meteorological Department, there is a warning of severe cold wave conditions along with dense fog and ground frost occurrence during the coming days, she said.
“Such extreme cold conditions may have deleterious effects on some of the field crops, orchards, vegetable crops and livestock,” Khingra warned.
“Vegetables and newly planted orchards are more vulnerable to cold waves and frost conditions.”
“Under such circumstances, these crops need to be kept hydrated by providing light irrigation to maintain the soil temperature. Application of mulches and protection barriers in the north-west direction are also effective, especially the tender vegetable crops and fruits,” she advised.
Farmers are advised to make regular visits to their fields and take these measures for protecting their crops from extreme cold and frost conditions. “Animals should be kept indoors and be given nutrient rich feed during extreme cold as their health could be severely affected under these conditions,” the expert said.
