Shetty back in reckoning

ANDORRA, July 1: Rahul Shetty and Sandipan Chanda came back into the reckoning with impressive victories over their formidable opponents, while Krishnan Sasikiran, Ponnuswamy Konguvel and V Saravanan all lost their games playing on the higher boards in the ongoing International Chess Tournament here.

Rahul Shetty played a wild game with black pieces against International Master Oms Pallize of Spain Elo 2415. Adopting the Slav defence, Shetty went for an all out attack on the white King by pushing his Kingside pawns.

He appeared to be in command when Oms unwisely made a piece sacrifice, but with mutual mistakes from both the sides, play went into an ending where Rahul8217;s rook and bishop easily won against his opponent8217;s rook.

In a Reti opening, Sandipan Chanda with black pieces was in a tight corner in the middlegame. However, Pogorelov allowed Sandipan to develop a dangerous mating attack and resigned when he had to give the queen by force.
