Fourth seed Monica Seles shook off a rusty start to battle into the fourth round at Wimbledon with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win over Japan8217;s Ai Sugiyama on Saturday.
The American, who had not lost a set to Sugiyama in eight previous meetings, struggled to find her range in the 41-minute first set and dropped her serve twice as her determined opponent dictated play from the baseline.
But Seles, spurred on by a vocal court one crowd, romped through the second before out-witting 26-year-old Sugiyama with her trademark groundstrokes in the decider. Seles will face 20th seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand in the last 16.
Earlier, Mark Philippoussis and Richard Krajicek set up an explosive Wimbledon fourth round clash on Friday, blasting their way past third round opponents.
But fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov joined the growing band of big-name failures, when he succumbed to fast-improving Belgian Xavier Malisse.
In the women8217;s draw Serena Wiliams scrambled into the fourth round with a tight 7-6, 7-6 victory over Els Callens, who flumoxed the number two seed by moving her around a slippery court.
Philippoussis bludgeoned Nicolas Kiefer into submission 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 while Krajicek 8212; the only former champion remaining in the draw 8212; battered Paradorn Srichaphan 7-6, 6-4, 6-2. Other ladies action saw third seed Jennifer Capriati beat diminutive Czech Daja Bedanova 6-4, 6-2. The American three-times Grand Slam champion once againstruggled to find her range early on, allowing the 21st-seeded Bedanova to steal an early lead.
But Capriati hit back immediately and the pressure of her power off the ground soon told as she broke in the ninth game on her way to claiming first set.
Seventh seed Jelena Dokic overcame early jitters to oust France8217;s Nathalie Dechy 7-5, 6-2 and will next meet Daniela Hantuchova.
