November 14: An Indian squad at any level of competition on home ground receives quite a stupendous ovation whatever the magnitude of spectators present in this case, the attendance was quite a surprise. However, the most conspicuous absentee in the Indian contingent was manager Manjit Dua.Instead, Sujay Ghorpade (a selector himself) found himself in a new role. Sujay, summing up his new role, informed, “I was here as head of the reception committee and look what I find myself into!”
Penny wise
The wrestling stands with fastened plywood tops, used during the Commonwealth wrestling four months back, proved quite a hinderance a day before the actual competition began, owing to the untimely rains. A suggestion floated was to put the stands out in the rains which was intervened by none other than Salima Khan, deputy director of sports on the grounds that the rains would spoil the plywood which cost a few thousands. Quite a remark considering that the seeping rain water has virtually spoilt one portion of the indoor stadium, laid at estimates going up in lakhs.
Chinglish!
The wrestling hall banner welcoming guests and the players misspelt participants with `participents’ and went all wrong when it came to spelling dignitaries which read `dignatories.’ Two smart kids in conversation while reading the banner no doubt spotted the error but one went on to say, “the players are Chinese, Japanese and so on, they would not know the difference. ” The boy must have hardly completed the sentence did a Chinese player walking past him smile and say “we Chinese do know quite a bit of English.”
