Scrap Games boycott call: AASU

The powerful All Assam Students8217; Union AASU has asked ULFA to immediately withdraw the latter8217;s call to boycott the 33rd National Games scheduled to be held here from February 9.

All Assam Students8217; Union adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said holding the National Games successfully was a 8220;matter of pride for Assam8221; and the United Liberation Front of Assam ULFA should immediately reconsider its boycott call. 8220;If anything happens, the prestige of the state and her people will be at stake,8221; Bhattacharya said.

The students8217; union also called upon the state to ensure that the Games were held peacefully, and that everybody who came to the state to take part in the National Games must go back with pleasant memories of Assam.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi described AASU8217;s call a 8220;very positive move8221; and said the entire state should exert pressure on the ULFA to withdraw its boycott call. 8220;We did have apprehensions that the ULFA would give such a call. But I am happy the people are all opposing this move. The opposition to the boycott call has been spontaneous,8221; he said.

The state8217;s sports fraternity led by former international table tennis star Monalisa Barua Mehta has already asked the ULFA to withdraw the boycott call.
