MUMBAI, JULY 13: Milind Ketkar Pune Vidya Bhavan, Ghatkopar, Yashodhan Gogte Bombay Scottish and twin sisters Mugdha and Purva Gokuldham School won both their games in the Entrant8217;s Division chess tournament, organised by the Bombay Chess Association, at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works canteen, Sayani Road.
In the second-round games in Group A, Milind, Yashodhan, Mugdha and Purva defeated their senior opponents Nikhil Wasnik, Suresh Palve, Santosh Hulawale and Jayram Sawant, respectively. All these school kids, along with 15 others, are jointly leading with two points each.
On the top board, top seed Sachin Bansode of Kirti College mishandled the end game in a winning position and went down to Rushikesh Vanarase in 74 moves. Bansode handled the white side of Queen8217;s Gambit game and had three pawns and a light bishop against Vanarase8217;s one pawn and one rook. On his 70th turn, Bansode pushed his E-4 pawn to dark square E-3 which created weakness losing the support of light square bishop.
To add in the tragedy, Bansode pushed his b7 pawn to b5 square allowing Varnase to capture the same 8220;en-passant8221; by his a-5 pawn. As Bansode could not stop the white 8220;B8221; passer, which was guarded by white rook from behind, he resigned on the 74th move. Vanarase is also on two points, while Bansode remained on one point.
Junior collegian Aditya Bhat, Arun Subramaniam, Harshwardhan Ambardekar and Rohit Kulkarni scored over blind player Manoj Patekar, Nitin Pednekar, Premdeep Pandit and KS Sheriary, respectively, to collect their second point.
