8226; It8217;s ridiculous that even in her apology Sania has not left an opportunity to pass a reckless remark about Muslims and their faith. Who says women are not allowed to enter the precincts of a mosque? Islam has placed no such restriction, provided they are dressed in a modest manner. Women used to enter and pray freely in mosques during the time of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam. The practice is prevalent in countries of the Middle East, South East Asia and even the US and Europe. In India, barring women may be the rule in many mosques due to certain other considerations or false assumptions but nowhere has it been sanctioned by Islam. Women move about freely in Hyderabad8217;s Makkah Masjid, but here was the case of an ad shoot done without obtaining prior permission.

Modi medicator
8226; Shiv Visvanathan in his article, 8216;Why Modi must go8217;, is probably correct in diagnosing the ills of Gujarat, but is prescribing the wrong medicine. He has not been residing in Ahmedabad for very long and this explains his incorrect analysis of the state8217;s problems. The right medicine to his diagnosis is that Modi must not go. While he recalls the past 8212; pre-2002, he is unable to remember the recent past. He wrongly pins the responsibility of the past on Modi. Visvanathan must now wait for the results of the elections, which will be out on December 23.

Crazy as cricket
8226; Virender Sehwag8217;s inclusion in the Pakistan tour, solely on the basis of his 8216;once upon a time past performance8217; shows he is in the good books of the high and mighty, despite his pathetic recent performances 8212; both as part of the Indian cricket team and as part of his state team 8216;Australian summer8217;. In the process, talented players like Aakash Chopra, Parthiv Patel, Manoj Tiwary, Rohit Sharma, S. Badrinath and others have been piling up the runs in the domestic circuit but yet are overlooked. It is this crazy process of selection that forced so many talented players to switch to the rebel ICL. At least Aakash Chopra, who performed well in his last tour of Australia, must be wondering what he had done.

Under the bridge
8226; This is in response to the news item, 8216;Staying clear of Ram, Govt gets back8230; Sethu8217;. I have been keenly reading the pieces appearing on the subject in your paper. As everybody knows, there8217;s no evidence to suggest that there is any man-made structure at the location where the Sethusamudram project is planned. The experts have opined that there is no scientific, archaeological or geological evidence to suggest the existence of a man-made structure. In any case, India today is focused on development. So why should it display uncertainty over a project that has so much potential?

Tremor of lucre
8226; It was interesting to read Rupa Abdi8217;s 8216;Tremor of change8217;. During my last visit to Bhavnagar, I missed tongas and old world courtesy for which Bhavnagar is well-known. Earlier, when people met in Bhavnagar, they stopped to discuss literature or music. But now they stop to discuss stocks and shares! A pity Bhavnagar is going in the same direction as other cities of Gujarat. It is not a tremor of change as far as the city is concerned, but an earthquake of change.
