Delightful theatre fare
Sunday evening, at the Nehru Memorial Hall was indeed delightful. Two English comedies, Sunday Costs Five Pesos and Anybody for tea saw several city youngsters perform brilliantly, under the guidance of Firoze Bharucha, the enterprising and enthusiastic director of the Poona Arts Theatre. The approach was indeed professional, comparable to any leading theatre group in Mumbai, with appropriate and pleasing stage settings and talented actors and actresses.

The second play, Anybody for tea, a strange murder mystery comprising a handsome police officer and six spinsters, took the cake. Young and dashing Riyaz Bharucha, who is not only a model but also makes some delectable pastries and cakes that are the best available in Pune (subjective access, may be) enacted the role of the handsome detective, Mr O’ Brian, whom all the spinsters had fallen in love with, splendidly.

And so did all the six spinsters comprising Firoze Bharucha herself as Miss Elizabeth, Farida Postwala as Miss Amantha, Marilyn Postwala as Miss Hildegarde, Tanushree Shekhri as Miss Birdie, Rashmi Devadasan as Miss Lucy and Megha Khetarpal as Miss Nettie. Their easy and chirpy manners stole the heart of the audience. Phil Postwalla as Kramer, also had a quiet role to play along with the young detective and was the most unwanted man for the six spinsters who wanted only O’Brian to solve their murder mystery.

The story revolved around the home of the spinsters, whose favourite passion was to look out of a window, and watch the handsome detective, doing his workouts, with binoculars. Desperately wanting to get to know him, they decided upon a murder in the house, which would compel him to come home. Miss Elizabeth and Miss Nettie pretended to die and Kramer and O’Brian were left scratching their brains to solve the puzzle. In Sunday costs five pesos, the story revolved around two youngsters who were madly in love. This was set in a Mexican village, and after a hectic verbal dual between the lovers, the girl’s friends intervene to win back her lover, who has left the place in anger. Amin Shaikh played the role of Fidel Duran, Gayatri Natarajan enacted the role of the girl in love. Berta, Salome and Tonia by Megha Khetarpal and Dipti Khetarpal respectively.
