First attempt

Two new designers, Aaliya and Arshiya, held their first fashion show at the Marine Plaza, this weekend. And while their clothes were young and fun, there was nothing unusual about them. Though at times the show seemed rather tacky, but for a first attempt, we must admit, it was not too bad. Instead of the usual shimmy up and down the catwalk, the models danced around the room and the audience took centrestage. The duo managed to attract a rather interesting melange of beautiful people. Model-actor Jas Arora and wife Bonnie, Vivek Dempo and Rina Shah of Rinaldi designs were there. And if you are wondering how to get a dekko at the clothes, then head for either Tresorie or Allure.

Friday fashion

Who says models don8217;t get on with each other or that they do not eat? These two myths were fast dispelled on Friday at the Fashion Bar amp; Bistro. A whole bunch of the glam set landed up to have a quick bite here, and on spotting other members of the same set, they decided to makea huge party out of it. Seen having a riotous meal were Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea, Tarun Raghavan, Helen Brodie, Sushma Reddy, photographer Farrokh Chothia and designer- cum- choreographer Sangeeta Chopra.

From the way the food vanished you would think that the jetset had forgotten to eat for a few days. Bipasha polished off a pasta dish, Tarun inhaled his chicken liver pate and Helen gnawed on a steak. Whereas Sangeeta opted for a healthy salad. Now, what we really want to know is how on earth do they stay so slim if they eat such rich food?

Manic Monday

This week, Monday had a deja vu quality about it 8212; as if Saturday had decided to revisit the city after a gap of only a day. There were three absolutely rocking events that could not be missed. There was model Gautam Kapoor8217;s Gomzi show at Allure, the launch of Mayebelline cosmetics at the Oberoi and Canadian vice-consul Sanjeev Chowdhury8217;s party to bring in Nina Pillai8217;s birthday.

One of the USA8217;s best known cosmetics companies, Maybellinemay be a late entrant to the Indian market but they certainly believe in coming in with a bang. They roped in the likes of model Lara Dutta looking pretty in peach, Gary Lawyer and Dolly Thakore. Now, this is one theatre-media personality who really knows how to let her hair down 8212; she was dancing up quite a storm on the floor. Strangely enough, the floor was rather bereft of glamour . Most models stayed away from it as they were more interested in looking at the make-up counters and trying on a bit of nail polish and lipstick.

Even after work, our models seem to be pre-occupied with the business of looking beautiful.

Party on

The next day, both party-maker AD Singh and model Namrata Baruwa shared a birthday, which they decided to celebrate. Yes, double trouble for the city8217;s party animals. They had to make a mad dash from one venue to the other before the witching hour shut all the bars down. While Namrata8217;s party was at Three Flights Up, AD tried to see how many close friends he could packinside the Copa Cupboard, ooops, we mean Cabana. Seen there were Gayatri and Atul Ruia of Phoenix Mills, photographer Farrokh Chothia and veejay Suchitra Pillai. This bubbly veejay, who is also cutting her own album, came with buddy Melroy D8217;Souza, vice-president of IN Media international.

The star of the evening, no doubt, was AD8217;s lovely friend Sabrina, an airhostess with British Airways. Anyway, even though Copa was packed we suspect it is only going to get worse. God knows how AD and Anupam he is the brains behind the bar will cope with the people who are going to throng to Copa now that they have announced a Tapas festival. On till November 20, the faux Latino bar will be serving these light Mediterranean hors-d8217;oeuvres. And to help these go down, there will be traditional Spanish Sangria! A lethal combination, we say.

Dubai bound

Some of Mumbai8217;s models had to miss some of the frenetic partying though. But don8217;t feel bad 8212; they were among the chosen few who were hand-picked to modelHerve Leger8217;s garments for his Dubai opening. This French designer is well known for his tight evening dresses and one of his most loyal clients is Parmeshwar Godrej. His dresses cost about Rs two lakh each, but they make a girl feel like a million dollars.

Among the models chosen to be a part of this prestigious affair, held at the Dubai Jumeria Beach Hotel were Sheetal Malhar, Nina Manuel, Achla Sachdev and Noyonika Chatterjee. Said Achla, quot;It was a grand affair. And I think that the Dubai crowds likes seeing Indian models in these French designs as they could relate to us.quot;

And finally

Yesteryear film actress Mumtaz was spotted at Not Just-Jazz BY The Bay, sampling the various salads their lunch buffet offers. Accompanied with a friend, she seemed to be enjoying the attention showered on her by the management, more than the meal. But she was not so gracious with her other fans.

Two young school children came up to her for an autograph 8212; obviously prompted by their parents, surely they hadno clue who this aunty was. Andwhen her pen ran out of ink, Mumtaz rudely sent off the little boy. It8217;s really sad that she should be so churlish. After all, if she couldn8217;t age gracefully, at least she could behave her age.

Debut showing

This Thursday, Melange is holding a preview to introduce the new ranges of three designers. Anuradha Vakil, whose NOOR line has been with Melange for a while, is the only old hand. The other two designers 8212; Anamika Khanna and Gayatri Ruia 8212; are exciting new entrants to the eco-friendly store8217;s range. The twentysomething Gayatri Ruia, wife of Atul Ruia, has always had a flair for design. A qualified interior designer, this February she also organised an exhibition of Murano Ganapatis. She has also been retailing her clothes in New Delhi8217;s Ensemble for a while. Now she is ready to set-up base in this city. quot; There will be some western clothes and some fusion wear, quot; she says. She has tried to keep her pricing down, and most of the clothes are under the Rs 10,000mark. quot; Most of the clothes are light 8212; even in the formal wear category, quot; she says.
