As part of a drive launched to reduce road accidents caused by the glare of vehicle lights, the Bengaluru traffic police have booked 10,179 vehicle drivers and riders for using unauthorised or high-beam lights.
According to the police, the special drive, titled Dazzling Light, was conducted between January 7 and January 12, during which Rs 50.89 lakh was collected in fines.
As part of a targeted night enforcement on January 10, the traffic police booked 1,843 cases across Bengaluru. The west division of the traffic police recorded the highest number of violations, with 1,025 cases booked on the night of January 10 alone. The division accounted for 5,391 cases in total.
The south division reported 331 cases during the January 10 night drive and 1,858 cases cumulatively since January 7. The east division recorded 329 cases on the night and 1,731 cases overall, while the north division booked 158 cases during the night drive and 1,199 cases in total.
Traffic police officials said more than 15 teams were deployed at strategic locations across Bengaluru, particularly during night hours. Most violators were issued spot fines and instructed to immediately remove the additional or high-intensity lights.
Officials warned that repeat offenders would face enhanced penalties under compounding offences.
“Use of high-beam lights within city limits can temporarily blind oncoming motorists and other road users, significantly increasing the risk of accidents,” a senior traffic police officer said.
The police said the drive was aimed not only at enforcement but also at raising awareness among motorists about responsible driving practices and the dangers posed by dazzling headlights.
