
Hyderabad, Nov. 12:: One national record and another meet record were the highlights of Day Two proceedings in the 10th Inter-Zonal Junior National Athletic Championship at Lal Bahadur Stadium here today.
South Zone8217;s KR Roshan put up a sterling performance to set a national record in boys under-20 high jump event. Nineteen-year-old Roshan, a product of Thiruvananthapuram Sports Council, cleared 2.08 metres in his second attempt and thus erased the existing mark of East Zone8217;s Sunil Kumar Azad 2.06m set in 1996. Sunil Singh North and Zulifkhar Haque East were tied for the second spot at 1.95m.
Jagmandar Singh of West Zone heaved the iron ball to a distance of 15.06m to set a meet record in the boys under-16 section shot put event. The old record 14.62 was in the name of Sawant North Zone who set it in 1997.Chance for Asiad hopefuls
CALCUTTA: The 38th Inter-State Athletics Meet will be held at the Salt lake Stadium here from November 15 to 17. The meet forms the last selection trial forthe athletes hopeful of making the Bangkok Asian Games in December.
Top athletes of the country will be in action for the three days. Even the athletes who have qualified for the Games have to participate in this meet as the Amateur Athletics Federation of India AAFI would want to see the consistency.
Most of the national team probables are currently under training in Jamshedpur and are expected to arrive here tomorrow. PT Usha, who had skipped the Open Nationals, will be running the 200m and the 400m.All athletes will be representing their individual states, unlike the Open Nationals where most represented institutional teams.
Contests will be held in 40 events, 21 in men8217;s category and 19 in women8217;s.
