THE Indian Railways proposal to increase the number of berths in long-distance trains by adding an extra one in the passage of AC-3 tier and sleeper classes is likely to be dropped midway in view of a large number of complaints from passengers. The proposal is already under implementation.

Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav admitted to The Indian Express that he had asked his officers to consider dropping the proposal. 8220;There have been complaints about discomfiture to passengers and I have, therefore, directed my officers to take them seriously and consider suspending the drive of adding extra berths,8221; he said.

The extra berths already added in some trains would be removed.

According to the Railways, the proposal was mooted to shorten waiting lists and cut down on refunds.

The proposal had already been implemented in a good number of long-distance trains and the extra berth was added in between the two rows of berths in the passage in AC-3 tier and sleeper classes. This took the total number of berths in a coach from 74 to 82.

However, passengers have been reporting serious inconveniences and nightmarish experiences. They had also lodged a barrage of complaints with the Railways, forcing it to do a rethink.

Asked whether the Railways was also considering slashing fares in view of airlines announcing significant cuts in fares, Lalu ruled it out. 8220;Airlines had first increased fares and now they are slashing it while the Railways has never increased its fare,8221; he remarked.
