Sabiha Kalolwala chats up with Right Said Fred, the sexy boys

The group consists of two brothers, Richard and Fred Fairbrass. They started the cliched way – by performing in cheap bars and clubs. From there they progressed to gigs and shows. A great achievement according to them, and they admit that they weren’t too good! Then, one day sometime in 1991, lady luck smiled on them I’m Too Sexy became an international rage. Overnight, Right Said Fred became the hottest band.

SUCCESS
The success of I’m Too Sexy made them instant celebrities and the title of song became the catch phrase of that time. From ’91 to ’94, they toured 30 countries riding on the success of just three songs – I’m Too Sexy, Don’t Talk Just Kiss and Deeply Dippy. They sold 17 million copies worldwide, became sex symbols and won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award, all in one go.

KIDAR GUL?
The instant fame went to their bald pates in a big way. “We started misbehaving and threw ourweight around in true rock-star style. We thought we were invincible. Even our agents discouraged us from giving live performances,” admit the duo, disarmingly. The bombing of their third album
Smashing in 1996, didn’t help. Overnight, the duo were reduced to has-beens.

MOOZIK
“Our forte is pop music. It makes people dance and enjoy themselves,” reveal the duo. When asked if they had received any formal training in singing, comes the pat pat reply – “For pop music, you don’t need to learn singing, you should be trained in accountancy (for your money) and martial arts (to fight off the fans).” Aaaargh!!

INFLUENCES
Both of them love The Beatles as well as the ’70s rock and pop bands. “We’ve been influenced by very talented bands. We might not be as talented as them, but at least, our bio-data contains some big names,” comes the hilariously honest answer.

MONEY MATTERS
Since their music wasn’t providing them with enuff money, Fred opened his own gymnasium andRichard went on to present Gaytime TV on BBC2. “I had always wanted to be on TV, so when I got this offer, I took it. As to why Gaytime TV, it’s better than doing a cookery or gardening show,” replies Richard with his characteristic humor.

THEIR FUTURE
They’re hoping to make a comeback this year. They have a great team around them and “We are certainly not going to make the same mistakes we made in the past.”
