Rape victim attempts self-immolation

AMBALA, Feb 24: Humiliated over her alleged rape by a neighbour, the victim Amarjit Kaur 18, set herself on fire by sprinkling kerosine on her body, in her house at village Rajauli, about 30 km from here. She was saved by her cousins, Seema and Monica, after she raised an alarm and fell unconcious thereafter.

In a complaint lodged with the police, Amarjit Kaur alleged that on Feb 20, one Amarjit Singh, son of Girdhara Singh of the same village, entered her house and finding her all alone in the house, raped her. This statement was recorded by Amarjit after she gained conciousness in the hospital. The victims father Kuldeep Singh is posted at Srinagar in the CRPF.

The police registered a case under Section 452, 376, 306 and 311 of the IPC for traspass, committing rape, attempt to suicide and threat to kill. The alleged rapist, Amarjit, is still at large.
