Gulab Singh elected HP Speaker

SHIMLA: Congress candidate Gulab Singh, who was fielded by the ruling BJP-HVC combine, was unanimously elected Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Monday amidst a walkout by Oppn Cong members. Singh, who resigned from Congress, said the Speaker was not supposed to be affiliated to any party.

New CBI chief

NEW DELHI: Trinath Mishra, CBI8217;s special director, was on Monday appointed director-in-charge from April 1, succeeding D R Karthikeyan. Mishra, a 1965 batch Uttar Pradesh cadre Indian Police Service officer, will hold office till further orders.

Jammu mishap

JAMMU: Eighteen persons were killed and 20 injured when a bus rolled down into a deep nullah at Kaghot near Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. Senior officials have rushed to the spot and rescue operations are in progress, sources said.

Ex-MLA expelled

CHENNAI: Former AIADMK MLA S Annamalai was expelled on Monday from the party by general secretary J Jayalalitha forquot;anti-partyquot; activities. Jayalalitha said Annamalai had worked against the party nominee in the recent LS poll and had tried to bring disrepute to the party.

ULFA men killed

NEW DELHI: Five hard-core militants of the United Liberation Front of Assam were gunned down by troops in an encounter near Kokrajhar in Assam. A soldier was also killed.
