Schools Closed: Noida, Ranchi, Rajasthan, & more cities where schools are shut due to cold wave

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district have ordered the closure of educational institutions for Classes 8 and above till January 15, 2026, in line with directions issued by the district administration. The decision applies to schools affiliated with the CBSE, ICSE, Uttar Pradesh Board and other recognised boards operating in the district.

The order has been issued in compliance with instructions from the District Magistrate, Gautam Buddh Nagar, citing concerns related to public health and safety. As per the official notice, all educational institutions falling under the specified categories are required to strictly follow the directive and ensure necessary compliance.

Here is the list of all the other schools that are closed in different parts of India:

Ranchi, Jharkhand

In Jharkhand’s Ranchi district, schools will remain shut for students up to Class 6 until January 14 due to the prevailing cold wave, officials announced. For Classes 7 to 12, lessons will begin at 10 am during this period. Authorities emphasised that the decision was taken to safeguard the health and well-being of students. Earlier, schools in the district had been ordered to stay closed until January 8, with the closure later extended to January 10.

Rajasthan

In Jaipur, holidays have been declared for students up to Class 5 on January 12–13, extending the winter break for the second time.

Schools in Dausa, Deeg, and Hanumangarh will remain closed on January 12 for Classes up to 8, while in Jalore, holidays have been announced for Classes up to 5 from January 12–14.

Jaisalmer schools will stay shut for Classes up to 8 till January 14, while Classes 9–12 are scheduled from 10 am to 4 pm.

In Nagaur and Bharatpur, schools will remain closed on January 12–13 for Classes up to 5.

Meanwhile, in Sikar, holidays have been extended until January 17 for Classes up to 5, and Classes 6–12 will run from 11 am to 4 pm. Teachers and other staff have been directed to attend schools as per departmental timings and carry out their duties.

Jhunjhunu Collector Arun Garg has extended the holidays for Classes 1 to 8 until January 13, citing the severe weather conditions.

Bihar

Amid continuously falling temperatures in Begusarai district, District Magistrate Shrikant Shastri has ordered the closure of all educational activities up to Class 8, including pre-schools and Anganwadi centres, in both government and private institutions from January 11 to 13.

Classes above Class 8 will continue with special precautions, operating between 10 am and 4:30 pm. Anganwadi centres will provide only cooked meals to children between 12 pm and 2 pm. However, activities related to board and pre-board examinations have been exempted from the directive.

On the other hand, in the Ara district, District Magistrate Tanay Sultania has ordered the closure of classes from pre-school to Class 8, including Anganwadi centres, until January 13. Classes above Class 8 will function between 10 am and 3:30 pm., while board and pre-board examinations will continue as scheduled.

Also, Saharsa district, where District Magistrate Dipesh Kumar has directed all government and private schools up to Class 10, along with Anganwadi centres, to remain closed until January 14. Classes for Class 11 and above will operate with precautions from 10 am to 4 pm., and Anganwadi centres will serve cooked meals to children between noon and 2 pm.

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

The Agra district administration has directed that all schools up to Class 12, affiliated with the UP Board, CBSE, and other boards, remain closed until January 12 in view of prevailing weather conditions.

Punjab

In line with the directives of the Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, and considering the persistent rise in cold and fog across the state, holidays have been declared in all government, aided, recognised, and private schools until January 13 to safeguard the health and safety of children and staff. Schools will resume normal operations from January 14, 2026

Haryana

In Haryana, the Directorate of School Education has declared winter holidays for all government and private schools from January 1 to January 15, 2025, with classes resuming on January 16.

Delhi

In Delhi, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has issued the academic calendar for 2025–26, confirming that winter vacations will run from January 1 to January 15, 2026..

Jammu and Kashmir

In the winter zone of the Kashmir Valley, including Srinagar, as well as the Jammu region, the government has announced the winter vacation schedule for schools amid plunging temperatures. Schools up to Class 8 will reopen on March 1, 2026, while higher classes will resume a week earlier on February 22, 2026, as temperatures across Kashmir continue to fall several degrees below freezing.

Telangana

The Telangana School Education Department has extended Sankranti holidays for schools statewide until January 16, 2026, following an order issued on January 5. The move comes after the General Administration Department declared January 16 (Kanuma) an optional holiday. Consequently, schools that were scheduled to reopen on January 16 will now resume classes on January 17, 2026.
