NC wins Ladakh seat

SRINAGAR: The National Conference created history of sorts by winning the prestigious Ladakh parliamentary seat for the first time. Its candidate Aga Syed Hussain was elected by a margin of 34,037 votes over his nearest Congress rival P Namgyal. Ladakh parliamentary constituency has so far been a traditional Congress seat barring once when an Independent from Kargil made it to Parliament.

Namgyal was the sitting MP from the constituency. Spalzes Angmo of BJP got 8,257 votes while Mohammed Yaqoob of BSP got 1,062 votes. About 1,081 votes were declared invalid.

Bhattal resigns

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal resigned from her post owning moral responsibility for the party8217;s poor show in the June 3 by-polls in the State. The former chief minister said she quit owning moral responsibility for party8217;s defeat in Tarn Taran Lok Sabha and Sham Chaurasi assembly by-polls which were won by the Shiromani Akali Dal.

BJP-HVC victory

SHIMLA:The BJP-HVC combine has secured absolute majority in the 68-member Himachal Vidhan Sabha winning all the four seats and the lone Lok Sabha seat in the elections held on June 3. The strength of the BJP-HVC combine had risen from 32 to 36 and it also enjoyed the support of the lone independent.

The strength of the Congress, which had won 31 seats during the assembly election had been reduced by one after Gulab Singh was elected speaker with the support of the BJP and HVC.

The Congress drew a blank in the just concluded elections and its strength remained at 30.

Gauthami weds

CHENNAI: Popular South Indian film actress Gauthami married a Mumbai-based businessman, Sandeep Bhatia, at a simple cermony at her residence here on Sunday morning. Gauthami joined the BJP just before the Lok Sabha elections and campaigned for the party in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during the elections.

Hyderabad clashes

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu tonight said that he wouldrequest the chief justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court to constitute a special court to try offenders involved in the communal disturbances in the old city.

BBC men freed

SANAA: A Yemeni court today acquitted three BBC journalists charged with visiting without authorisation the stronghold of a tribe which recently kidnapped a British family. 8220;They were found not guilty and the court has decided that all their equipment with the tapes should be given back to the reporters,8221; the judge said.
