Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 to re-release in cinemas on January 9; will it meet the same fate as Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great?

Kapil Sharma's Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 is all set to re-release in cinemas after its initial run was thwarted by Dhurandhar. Anupam Kher also took to the same route with his directorial Tanvi The Great, which was wiped out of theatres thanks to Saiyaara.

The new year brings new hope for Anukalp Goswami’s comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2. The Kapil Sharma-starrer will get a shot at box office redemption after its initial run in December 2025 was thwarted by the juggernaut that was Aditya Dhar’s period spy thriller Dhurandhar. The Ranveer Singh-starrer broke all box office records and obliterated all new competition, including Kapil’s comedy which released in cinemas only a week after Dhurandhar.

New year, new release date

The makers have announced that Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 will now re-release in cinemas on January 9. This will allow it more room to breathe given its initial box office run was sandwiched between Dhurandhar and James Cameron’s Hollywood fantasy epic Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has earned over Rs 150 crore at the Indian box office since its release on December 19, 2025.

Its new release window seems more favourable, now that both Dhurandhar and Avatar: Fire and Ash have begun to slow down. Besides the two holdover films, it’ll also face fresh competition from Sriram Raghavan’s period war drama Ikkis. The Agastya Nanda-starrer, produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, has been getting rave reviews from critics upon its theatrical release today.

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 will have a week to perform sans any new major competition before two new films hit cinemas on January 16 — Vir Das’ directorial debut Happy Patel, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, and Vipul Vig’s buddy comedy Rahu Ketu, reuniting the popular Fukrey duo of Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma. And then, another potential box office juggernaut will release in cinemas on January 23 in the form of Anurag Singh’s period war drama Border 2, starring Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh.

Same fate as Tanvi The Great?

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 isn’t the first film from last year to opt for a re-release after its initial run was compromised by a box office record-breaking blockbuster. Last year, Anupam Kher’s coming-of-age film Tanvi The Great had to bow down to the box office domination of another film that released on the same day (July 18, 2025) — Mohit Suri’s romantic drama Saiyaara. The film, backed by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films and marking the debut of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, made history as the highest grossing Indian romantic film and the highest grossing Indian film with newcomers, amassing Rs 329.20 crore at the domestic box office.

“We released the film on the same day when Yash Raj Films’ Saiyaara was releasing and it got completely wiped out. It depressed me. It made me feel very sad, not just for myself, but for the new actor, whom I took from my acting school, and almost 200 people worked on the film,” said Anupam on Expresso last year. His directorial was headlined by newcomer Shubhangi Dutt. “Everything was going fine, but the world wanted to see a love story and rightfully so. Young, teenage love story had not come for a long time and the system here is that even if you’re releasing the film in 400 theatres, but if the other film is doing very well, they will remove your film. So it was a failure which was very heartbreaking for me,” he added.

Anupam Kher later admitted Saiyaara’s historic success surprised him to a great deal. “Even Aditya Chopra must have been surprised by it, everyone was surprised but theek hai… thank God Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra are part of my family, I grew up in cinema with them. If it was somebody else it would have been very painful,” said Anupam. He has worked with late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and his son Aditya Chopra in multiple blockbusters like Darr (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Mohabbatein (2000), Veer-Zaara (2004), and the former’s swansong Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012).

Kher took to the re-release route as Tanvi The Great came back to theatres on September 26, 2025. But ever since its re-release, the film has not been able to earn more than Rs 1 lakh on any given day. That’s even lower than its initial first five days at the domestic box office, when it at least earned within the range of Rs 11 lakh to 65 lakh. The actor-filmmaker recently shared on social media that his film has run for 14 weeks at the domestic box office, but as per Sacnilk, it’s earned only Rs 2.38 crore across both its phases combined.

In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, Mohit Suri’s mentor and uncle Mahesh Bhatt had claimed that Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great is a superior film. “Anupam Kher has made an outstanding film in Tanvi The Great. How it did at the box office doesn’t concern me. Had he wanted, he’d have made a film with any big star. But to make a film on an autistic girl’s issues and to mount it on that canvas with conviction makes it one of the finest films I’ve seen,” he said.
