Switzerland Ski Resort Bar Blast News Live Updates: Swiss investigators believe sparkling candles atop wine bottles ignited fatal bar fire

Investigators said Friday that they believe sparkling candles atop Champagne bottles ignited a fatal fire at a Swiss ski resort when they came too close to the ceiling of a bar crowded with New Year's Eve revelers.

Authorities planned to look into whether sound-dampening material on the ceiling conformed with regulations and whether the candles, which give off a stream of upward-shooting sparks, were permitted for use in the bar.

Forty people were killed and another 119 injured in the blaze early Thursday as it ripped through the busy Le Constellation bar at the ski resort of Crans-Montana, authorities said. It was one of the deadliest tragedies in Switzerland’s history.Officials said they would also look at other safety measures on the premises, including fire extinguishers and escape routes.

Switzerland Ski Resort Bar Blast News Live Updates: Investigation to assess whether fountain candles atop champagne bottles caused fire

Scrutiny is intensifying over the safety arrangements at a Swiss bar that burst into flames during a New Year's Eve party, killing at least 40, as prosecutors said the blaze likely began when sparkling candles were held too close to a ceiling.

Witnesses reported seeing staff at the Le Constellation bar carrying so-called fountain candles atop bottles of champagne, and questions have also arisen about a foam ‍material used to soundproof the ceiling of the basement where revellers danced.

Beatrice Pilloud, chief prosecutor of Valais, the canton that is home to the bar in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana, said that available indications were that the fire started because the sparklers got too near to the ceiling.

Switzerland Ski Resort Bar Blast News Live Updates: 'Fountain candles' appear to have started Crans-Montana fire, says prosecutor

Initial investigations suggest that the fire which tore through a Swiss ski resort ‍bar started when 'fountain candles' attached to champagne bottles were carried aloft ‌too close to the ceiling, the local prosecutor said on Friday.

"Everything suggests that the fire started ‌from the burning candles or 'Bengal lights' that had been ‌attached to ‌champagne bottles. These went too close ‌to ‍the ceiling. From there, a rapid, very rapid and widespread conflagration ensued," prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud told ‌a news conference.
