LONDON, JUNE 19: Wasim Akram delivered the first major punch, declaring that Pakistan would be mentally stronger than a battled-scarred Australia in Sunday8217;s World Cup final at Lord8217;s as he traded words with Steve Waugh in pre-final psychological war.
8220;We have stuck together and qualified for the final and we are now just one match away from winning the trophy,8221; he said. 8220;I think we are mentally tougher than them,8221; Akram said.
But Pakistan have been inconsistent, stamping itself as world beaters one day and easy beats the next through the event in which it scored six wins to three losses.
8220;Pakistan are the sort of side that can be brilliant one moment and not so good the next. They8217;re a tough side to play against because you never know what you8217;re going to get,8221; skipper Waugh said.
Akram felt his side might have a slight edge because Australia lacks a quality fifth bowler while Pakistan has the advantage of a youthful side. While Imran Khan won the 8217;92 cup with luminaries like Miandad and AbdulQadir, Akram will turn to the likes of rookies Razzaq, Wasti, Azhar Mahmood and Shoaib Akhtar to supplement the experienced hands of Inzamam, Moin and Ijaz.
8220;I don8217;t think the seniors have done a great deal in this tournament. It8217;s been the younger players all the way,8221; he said.
