Eight-hour power cuts leave residents frustrated in Kansal, Nayagaon

Prolonged and frequent power cuts by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) have severely disrupted daily life in Kansal and Nayagaon villages of Mohali district, located near the Chandigarh lake. Local residents allege that electricity remains unavailable for up to eight hours a day, while at times power supply is disrupted every hour without any prior notice, causing immense hardship.

Vijaya Pushkarna, a resident, said that whenever a complaint is lodged through the PSPCL app, a message soon appears stating, “Your power supply has been restored”, but in reality, electricity does not resume and no permanent solution is provided.

“This has led to a growing loss of trust in the power department,” she said.

Residents also alleged that the PSPCL complaint helpline numbers remain unanswered. Despite the winter season, long power outages are causing serious difficulties for the elderly, patients, and young children. Students, especially those attending online classes or preparing for examinations, are facing major disruptions. Local traders said their businesses are coming to a halt due to the erratic power supply, leading to increasing financial losses.

Expressing his frustration, Kansal Residents Welfare Association president Sumeet Singh said for the three-four months power cuts have become “routine” in the area.

“Living without electricity for eight hours a day has made life miserable. Complaints on the PSPCL app result only in paperwork. If outages are unavoidable, prior intimation should be given and a permanent solution ensured, otherwise people will be forced to protest,” he added.

PSPCL official Sandeep Kumar said that due to increased load in Kansal, transformers were failing frequently. To resolve the issue, new power lines have been laid from Nayagaon to Kansal and a new feeder has been installed, which caused temporary long outages.

“Most of the work is nearly complete, and residents will soon get relief from frequent cuts, including during the upcoming summer,” he claimed.
