The Sukhna Enclave Residents Welfare Association (Kansal) has alleged continuous construction of a commercial building within the residential locality, prompting the Mohali administration to announce strict action if violations are confirmed at the site.
Residents claim that a family member of a former police officer is illegally raising a commercial structure on residential plots to run a club in the heart of the housing society. P S Bhinder, president of the Residents Welfare Association (RWA), first lodged a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohali on October 1, stating that the construction violates the approved Master Plan of Nayagaon, which earmarks the area exclusively for residential use.
Bhinder said that despite the complaint and subsequent reminders, no concrete action has been taken, allowing the construction to progress rapidly. Residents maintain that the illegal structure has expanded significantly between October and December, a fact clearly visible in photographs submitted to the authorities.
Frustrated by administrative inaction, the RWA president sent a detailed email reminder to the Deputy Commissioner on December 26, alleging that the illegal construction was continuing “at full pace” despite earlier directions to the officials concerned.
“We are distressed to bring to your notice that no action has been taken on our complaint so far, despite your clear instructions to the field staff to stop the illegal construction,” Bhinder wrote in his fresh representation.
Questioning the role of ground-level officials, he added, “We fail to understand why the field staff is not taking the necessary steps to permanently halt the illegal construction of a commercial building on residential plots.”
Another RWA member remarked, “The law is being openly flouted, and construction is continuing day and night. If this is allowed to go on, it will set a dangerous precedent.”
Residents further allege that banquet halls, clubs, and other commercial buildings continue to mushroom in the area with impunity, despite a ban on construction activities imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the Sukhna Lake catchment zone. The RWA has once again urged the Deputy Commissioner to personally intervene and take strict action “once and for all” in the larger interest of society residents.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said, “When the matter was first brought to our notice, teams were sent to the site and the work was stopped. If construction has resumed, I will direct the officials concerned to inspect the site on Sunday and ensure that the work is halted immediately.”
She added, “Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the orders.”
