Laxman fit for second Test

Indian middle-order is all set to look a little bulkier for the Indians going into the second Test with VVS Laxman being ruled fit.

The Indian middle-order is all set to look a little bulkier for the Indians going into the second Test at Kolkata with VVS Laxman being ruled fit for the encounter which begins on Sunday.

This news was confirmed by chairman of the national selection committee Kris Srikkanth, who said,Laxman is going to be back in the Kolkata Test match. He has said he is 100 per cent fit. His capability will bolster the Indian batting. The 35-year-old middle-order batsman had suffered a finger injury while attempting a catch during the first Test against Bangladesh at Chittagong last month. But while he was picked in the squad for the Nagpur Test against the South Africansas one of only six regular batsmen despite not being fully fit; Laxman was ruled out on the first morning of the match.

Rohit Sharma who had been hurriedly called up as cover for Laxman then had injured himself during the pre-match practice leading to wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha being picked as a specialist batsman. The inexperienced middle-order,which included an opener playing his fourth Test and two debutants failed to make much of an impression in both innings.

While it was Murali Vijay who batted at No. 3 at Nagpur in place of Dravid it will be interesting to see whether Laxman takes over that spot at the Eden Gardens. After all it was from that position that the Hyderbadi batsman scored his historic 281 against the Australians here during that unforgettable Test in 2001. The Eden Gardens in fact has been overall a happy hunting ground for Laxman who played the second Test of his career against South Africa on this ground and has since amassed 898 runs in eight Tests.
