PATNA, APRIL 18: Rafiq Ali of Calcutta emerged victor in a nerve tingling play-off, beating Mhow8217;s Mukesh Kumar with a birde on the 73rd hole of the Patna Open Golf Tournament, here today.

The champion carded a four-under 66 on the final day to force the play-off. Mukesh shot a level-par 70 and the two were seven-under 273 after 72 holes. In third place was Akbar Ali, placed three strokes behind at four-under 276.

On the first play-off hole, Rafiq split the fairway of the par 51st hole. Mukesh, a bit unlucky, pulled the ball to the right of the fairway. A good second shot from a comparatively tough position saw Mukesh8217;s ball lodge itself on the slope of the left bunker.

Rafiq8217;s second shot placed him four feet to the right of the green.

With no preferred lie available from the slope of the bunker as per the rules, Mukesh was left with a tough chip, which settled 18 feet short of the cup. Rafiq8217;s chip, however, left him with a 3-feet putt to hand him his second title of his career.

Starting off instyle, Rafiq made a birdie on th first hole, but bogeyed the 4th when he missed his chip-putt. His second birdie came on the ninth to make him one-under at the turn. During his back nine, a solitary bogey on the 13th, was sandwiched by a string of birdies on the 10th, 12th, 15th and 17th, which was a result of a superb 16-footer putt, to pocket Rs 83,800 for the win.
