MUMBAI, September 15: Top seed and FIDE rated player, PB Bhilare had a rather bad start to his return to competitive chess. Playing at the Senior Division Chess Tournament being organised by the Bombay Chess Association at the Zandu Pharmaceutical Works Canteen, Bhilare was shocked by Dahanu’s Mangesh Patel in 29 moves.

AN Iyer, seeded 17, was the only other seed to lose, losing to Ganesh Solkar in 70 moves in a King’s Indian Defence game.

In another encounter, second seed and former National `B’ player, Pradeep Paranjpe used Dragon Variation of Sicilian defence to beat PS Dabholkar in 52 moves. Shirish Kumar, Ramesh Khadye, Ganesh Bhilare, Anant Chavan, Harish Narayan, Chandrakant Reddy, R Gajangi, Nitin Nawar and Nitin Warde were the other notable first round winners.

KAMAT ADVANCES: Amar Kamat, a seventh standard student of Patkar Vidyalaya, defeated D M Patange of MSEB in the third-round of the Anant Mitra Mandal Open chess tournament at the Date Hall (Dombivli, East), today.
