
4 in fray for lone seat in Mizoram
AIZAWL: Four candidates are in the fray for the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat, election for which is scheduled to be held on February 23. The ruling Congress has fielded John Lalsangzuala, the septuagenarian finance minister and the BJP has pinned its hope on the state unit president P L Chhuma.
Dr Lalthangliana, MLA, would contest as the Mizo National Front MNF candidate while Dr H Lallungmuana, a candidate of the United People8217;s Front would be supported by former chief minister Brig T Sailo8217;s Mizoram People8217;s Conference MPS, the MNF quot;nationalistquot; and other local parties with tribal affiliations. No candidate has filed nomination papers as yet.
SP list for Bihar
PATNA: The Samajwadi Party today released its first list of candidates for 14 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar. The party8217;s state unit president and member of the dissolved Lok Sabha, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, would seek election from his home constituency, Purnea, while former chief minister Satish Prasad Singh, would be the party8217;s nominee for Khagaria.

MADURAI: Janata Party president Dr Subramanian Swamy today filed his nomination papers for the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu at the district collectorate here. Swamy, who is contesting the seat in alliance with the AIADMK-led front, was accompained by state president of his party V S Chandralekha and hundreds of volunteers from front constituents, BJP, AIADMK, Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress and PMK.
PMK nominee
CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi PMK today announced the name of the fifth candidate for the coming Lok Sabha elections, five days after it had announced the candidature of four others. PMK leader Dr S Ramadoss said M Dorai would be the party8217;s candidate for Wandavasi parliamentary constituency. The PMK, a partner of the AIADMK-led front, had been allocated five seats, Chidambaram SC, Myiladuthurai, Vellore, Dharmapuri and Wandavasi.
Bengal voters
SILIGURI: Over 1.5 lakh new voters would exercise their franchise in north Bengal for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, official sources said here. Six districts of north Bengal, split over seven Lok Sabha segments, have 77,00,594 electorate this time as against 75,35,099 in 1996, the sources said. The increase in the number of electorate was maximum in Coochbehar district with 42,679 new enrolments while it was minimum in north Dinajpur district with only 18,669 new entries, the sources added.

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha, is to undertake a 19-day campaign tour of Tamil Nadu from February 1. Jayalalitha would address public meetings in 41 towns, winding up her whistle-stop campaign at Sivakasi on February 19.
