GUWAHATI: The ruling Asom Gana Parishad split on Thursday with 800 rebel members launching a new political party with the claimed support of suspended AGP MLA Bhrigu Kumar Phukan and rebel leader Brindaban Goswami, MLA. The new outfit 8211; Asom Jatiya Sanmilan 8211; was floated at a convention here, attended by the two rebel leaders.

RJD in Orissa

NEW DELHI: The Laloo Prasad Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal RJD will contest 13 out of 21 Lok Sabha seats in Orissa, leaving the rest to non-BJP and non-Congress parties. Orissa RJD president Bhagabat Beher said a decision to this effect was taken by the party leadership last night.

Rajasthan list

JAIPUR: Jaswant Singh, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Shanti Lal Chaplot and two ministers in the Shekhawat Government figure in the second list of 20 candidates announced by the BJP Jaswant Singh will contest from Chittorgarh and Chaplot from Udaipur while Transport Minister Rohitashwa Kumar and Labour Minister N L Meena will try their luck from Dausa and Salumber respectively.

Jayanti defects

BANGALORE: Multi-lingual cine actress Jayanti today joined Lok Shakti headed by former Karnataka chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde. Jayanti, who has acted in over 300 films, mostly Kannada, and in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi, joined Hegde8217;s outfit .

Swamy denial

MADURAI: Janata Party president Dr Subramanian Swamy today denied reports in a section of the press that he would be contesting the elections from Madurai on the AIADMK8217;s two leaves symbol. Describing the reports as quot;imagination of pressquot;, he said he would contest the election on the Janata Party8217;s original symbol quot;haldhar within wheelquot;.

AITMK nominees

COIMBATORE: The All India Tamizhaga Munnetra Kazhagam Tamil Nadu Progressive Front AITMK is to field candidates in four Lok Sabha seats. A release said A Selvaraj would contest from Coimbatore, P Muthiah from Nilgiris, R Muthumani Devendirar from Periyakulam and R Ponnusamy from Ramanathapuram.

Karunakaran seat

THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: Former CM K Karunakaran will contest from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency and his son and KPCC general secretary K Muraleedharan from Thrissur on the Congress ticket. They were among the 13 candidates cleared tonight.
