A day before his comeback bout against Kevin McBride, Mike Tyson had said, 8216;8216;I8217;m gonna gut him like a fish8217;8217;. But after six rounds on the D-Day, he sat on the mat resting on the ropes with the realisation that he wasn8217;t simply good enough. We look at some similar embarrassing comebacks over the years:
Bjorn Borg
At 34, in 1991, Bjorn Borg entered the Monte Carlo Open with the hopes of making a comeback. Same tight outfit, same icy blue eyes, and unfortunately, the same wooden racket. A first round loss saw him switch to the Senior Tour.
Michael Jordan
No one will ever know what was left for Jordan to achieve when turned came out of retirement to turn up for Washington Wizards. Frequent injuries while facing younger and fitter players meant the magic was missing.
George Best
Forget his alcohol problem, forget the women but it was his comebacks that were the saddest. Before he made a comeback with United, Best had brief spells with Stockport, Fulham, Hibernian, Los Angeles Aztecs and San Jose Earthquakes, Boursemouth before finally retiring in 1983.
Muhammad Ali
Boxing has seen too few respectable retirements. Even The Greatest had trouble adjusting to life away from the ring. Ringsiders pleaded with the referees to stop Muhammad Ali8217;s final comeback fight against sparring partner Larry Holmes in the fourth round. The referee finally stopped the fight in the eleventh round.
Sugar Ray Robinson
It was said that he boxed as though he was playing violin. But that was in his prime, when he had lost only three of his first 330 fights. On his comeback he lost five of his 10 fights. He first announced his retirement when he was 31, but soon returned to the ring and fought till he was 44. On the way he lost to boxer who wouldn8217;t have dared to enter the ring during he was in his prime.
8230; but Martina is different
One of those rare comebacks that defied the general rule. In 1994, she retired after winning everything there was to be won. When she decided to return in 2000, there were many who saw her as a real threat. In 2003, at 46, she won the Australian and Wimbledon mixed doubles crown with Leander Paes. At Wimbledon, 2004, she became the oldest player to win a singles match in the Open era, and made the finals of French Open mixed doubles in 2005.
