MUMBAI, JANUARY 31: National Cricket Club won the Purshottam Shield cricket tournament, defeating Shivaji Park Gymkhana by virtue of their first innings lead of 51 runs at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana, on Monday.

The winners received a cash prize of Rs 15,000, while the runners-up got Rs 10,000. Manish Patel (National) was awarded the best bowler prize, while SPG’s Amit Pagnis was declared best batsman and Ojas Mehta of SPG bagged the best fielder prize. Each received Rs 1,500.
Brief score: National 305 and 229-7 (Sunil More 61, Shekhar Bhor 50 n.o.; Yogesh Kaudhare 3-41) bt Shivaji Park Gym 254 (Amit Pagnis 64, Sushant Manjrekar 71; Manish Patel 5-58, Rajesh Pawar 3-55) on first innings.

Kaveri Thakur’s feat
Young marathon swimmer Kaveri Thakur has become the first swimmer to swim around Panaji Island in Goa.

The 16-year-old student of S K Somaiya Vinay Mandir covered the distance of 58 kms in 13 hours.

Kaveri has already swum the cold water English Channel, being part of the relay team that was awarded the fastest and the youngest team trophy. In August 1998, she stood first among the junior girls at the World marathon swimming competition, Zurich.
