Murthy wants complaint quashed

Infosys chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy filed a petition before the Karnataka High Court today seeking the quashing of proceedings in a local court in connection with a complaint filed against him for alleged remarks against national anthem at the Infosys Mysore campus on April 8.

The complaint against Murthy was filed by an advocate member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Raghavendra Thirthahalli, before the second additional chief metropolitan magistrate M Mujahid Ulla in Bangalore on May 3. The advocate filed the complaint stating that the local police had failed to act upon his complaint against Murthy filed on April 16.

Based on the complaint, magistrate Ulla issued summons to Murty returnable on June 21 and ordered registering of a criminal case under Section 3 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971. According to the complaint, Murthy said at the Infosys Mysore campus on April 8 that the national anthem was not sung and instead an instrumental version was played at the programme to avoid embarrassment to foreigners present at the campus.

Murthy subsequently issued a statement apologising for hurting anybody8217;s sentiments by his remarks on April 8. 8220;If the media statement has hurt anybody8217;s sentiments, I deeply apologise,8221; he said. In April, the issue had created a stir in the Karnataka legislature with several political leaders condemning the remarks.
