New Postmaster General

G Mohanakumar, an officer of the 1969 batch of the Indian Postal Service, has assumed charge as Postmaster General Mail Management, Office of Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, Mumbai with effect from April 28. Before the IPS, Mohankumar was a lecturer at Sanskrit College, Thirvuananthapuram from 1966-69. Before joining the present assignment, he was on deputation as Executive Director Vigilance, in Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited, Kerala.

KES principal retires

Premavathy Nair, principal of the Kalina Education Society8217;s school with over 3,000 children on its rolls, retired after a service of nearly 30 years.

A recipient of the Best Teacher award from the state government and an Appreciation Award from Governor Dr P C Alexander, Nair has contributed to the Adult Literacy programme in Kalina area. She adopted backward students from night schools and arranged for special classes to coach them. Nair, a Managing Council member of the KES, isalso an office bearer of the Indo-Czech Friendship Society, and was briefly an office bearer of the Mumbai Head-Masters8217; Association.

Federation of women8217;s groups

Plans are afoot to set up a federation of all women8217;s organisations working in various fields including the labour unions, announced the president of the Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal, Neelam Gorhe.

Gorhe made these announcements at a function organised by Swayamsiddha8217;, an NGO dealing with helping women gain economic independence set up by a Shiv Sena worker Deepa Mantri. The function was supported by the Shiv Sena Mahila Aghadi.

State minister for employment, Gajanan Kirtikar in his speech reiterated that the state government would support women take up independent ventures for gainful employment.

Open house on geomagnetism

The Indian Institute of Geomagnetism will hold an open house at its campus near R C Church, Colaba, as part of National Technology Day on May 11. The function is open to the public from 11 am to 5pm. The institute is involved in studying the earth8217;s magnetic field as well as the influence of the sun8217;s radiation on this field.
