Police raid Dagdi Chawl for 9 hours

Continuing their attempt to break the back of don-turned-politician Arun Gawli, over 100 police officers from zone-II of the Mumbai police raided Dagdi Chawl for nine hours on Sunday morning. The raid, which began at around 7 am, is touted as one of the biggest ever by the Mumbai police on Gawli8217;s stronghold. Deputy Commissioner of Police, zone-II, K Venkatesham, told Express Newsline, 8220;It was an extensive search operation since we had received reports that some criminals were holed up in Dagdi Chawl.8221;

The police were tipped off that Gawli8217;s top aide Santosh Adivalekar alias Bandya was likely to visit the chawl on Sunday morning. The police claim that the raid yielded no results and that they had to return empty-handed.

8220;We only picked up criminals who had old cases against them,8221; said Venkatesham. The police have rounded up over 15 suspects and taken them in the custody of the Agripada police for questioning. Police also conducted an elaboratesearch of Dagdi Chawl and checked for hidden cavities that could have been used for sheltering criminals. They found four such cavities, all of which have been sealed. As part of their crackdown against Gawli, the police detained Gawli8217;s manager, Raju Phillips, under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Persons Act last week. Police also gunned down Gawli8217;s second in command, Sharad Bandwe on Saturday night.

Sainiks burn Imran8217;s effigy

A group of 15 Shiv Sainiks burnt an effigy of Imran Khan in the busy Shivaji Chowk at Kalyan at 7.30 pm today protesting against his demand to arrest Bal Thackeray for disrupting the forthcoming India-Pakistan cricket test series.The Sainiks stormed Shivaji Chowk chanting Har Har Mahadev and denouncing the former Pakistani test cricketer, Pakistan and ISI. While police have still to arrest anybody, the Mahatma Phule police station has registered an offence.
