Copenhagen, May 22: Dane Mette Sorensen became the first European women8217;s singles medalist at the World Championships in 16 years when she beat Commonwealth Champion Kelly Morgan last evening.

Sorensen will meet Dai Yun tonight after the Chinese fourth seed8217;s 6-11, 11-5, 11-7 win over South Korean Lee Kyung-won.

China8217;s Gong Ruina, the second seed, raced into the semi finals with an 18-minute 11-3, 11-2 win over Hartono Cindana of Indonesia. In the men8217;s singles World No 1 Peter Gadechristensen won the all-Danish battle between the champion elect and the defending champion, beating Peter Rasmussen 15-4, 15-13.

But Kenneth Jonassen was beaten by Taiwan8217;s Fung Permadi 15-13, 12-15, 15-10. Sun Jun, the 1997 runner-up, kept China8217;s hopes alive when he put out Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen 15-5, 15-13.
