Roger Federer will be gunning to pass yet another milestone when he opens the defence of his US Open title at Flushing Meadows next week.
Seven straight wins over the two weeks will make him only the third man in the professional era to notch up a hat-tick of titles in the year8217;s final major, drawing him level with legends John McEnroe 1979-81 and Ivan Lendl 1985-85. And having just turned 25, it will bring him ever nearer to the holy grail of 14 wins in the four Grand Slam events held by Pete Sampras. The Swiss star currently has eight wins in Grand Slam tournaments.
Federer has a relatively negotiable run through the draw with a meeting with Chinese Taipei8217;s Yeu-Tzuoo Wang in the opening round.
On the women8217;s side, it8217;s been Amelie Mauresmo8217;s year so far, and she has the chance at the US Open to match the feats of Serena Williams and Martina Hingis by winning three Grand Slam titles in the same year.
Henin-Hardenne will be across the net from her in the final once again if the seedings are honoured.
In the other two sections of the draw, Russian glamour girl Maria Sharapova looks to have a comfortable enough run into the last four.
