Stating that “political will” was of foremost priority in development of projects for the larger public interest, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday urged the Vadodara Municipal Corporation to “do quality work” so as to have surplus funds to utilise along with “peace” in the days.

Patel was speaking at the event to inaugurate projects and lay foundation stone for development works worth Rs 957 crore of the VMC, where he also cited the example of the Sabarmati Riverfront and said, “To make development projects a reality, you need vision and determination… you have all seen the Riverfront in Ahmedabad… we saw it earlier too. It is an example of political will. There are thousands of slums along the river but you can only develop when you have shifted them, allotted them homes; then the riverfront has been made.. No one was crushed in the name of development. Whatever firm decisions have to be done for the larger development need political will and which is what we (BJP) has done.”

Stating that the Urban Development budget has increased from Rs 500 crore in 2005 when then Chief Minister Narendra Modi started the Urban Development Year to the present day budget of Rs 30,000 crore, CM Patel stressed on the quality of work. He said, “Earlier, if you wanted to complete works worth Rs 1 lakh, you had to run from pillar to post… Today, you can get work worth crores of rupees done even for a corporator. Gujarat has ranked first in finance management… So, if you do quality work, you will not only have peace for five years but you will also have surplus money… you will have so much money that you would not know how to use it. So… make a list of projects and ensure quality work.”

Among the works for which Patel laid the foundation stone includes road projects – several of which have already seen the work order being issued in October, the Vadodara Urban Haat and Exhibition Center to be built at a cost of Rs 35 crore as well as 17 water supply projects worth Rs 255 crore. The CM also inaugurated drainage projects worth Rs 231 crore and laid the foundation for additional drainage projects worth Rs 74 crore on Friday. Apart from the VMC event, Patel also visited the Gurudwara on Veer Bal Diwas and attended the event of VYO’s Global Hindu Vaishnav Prern Mahotsav.
