PUNE, SEPT 22: The Pune Cantonment Board PCB today decided to purchase two mechanical 8220;refuse collectors8221; at an estimated cost of Rs 38 lakh to combat the garbage menace in the cantonment.

A decision to this effect was taken at the special budget meeting when president Brig. Madan Gopal declared that the vehicles would be purchased from the income received from the conservancy agreement with the army. The vehicles will comprise 250 receptacles of 1 cubic metre each. The collectors will first be used in the bungalow areas of the cantonment on an experimental basis, following which they will be introduced in the civil areas of the cantonment. Another Rs 15 lakh will be allocated towards the sewerage cleaner to be introduced later.

The board has allocated Rs 69 lakh for road widening, provision of footpaths, storm water drains, widening of Ghorpuri Road, Wanowrie Road, repairs from the AFSC Road to Koregaon Park and widening of Muktidham Road. Rs 20 lakh have been allocated for expansion in the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Cantonment General Hospital while Rs 12.15 lakh have been allocated for the lift in the hospital premises. Another Rs 5 lakh have been allocated for the first phase of remodelling and improvement of the sewerage system of the civil area of the cantonment.
