CHANDIGARH, Nov 19: As part of its road-recarpeting programme, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh8217;s Enforcement Staff today removed some 50 quot;unauthorisedquot; structures from road-berms in Sector 7-C. However, the removals were stopped after sector residents protested the razing of hedges, barbed wires and parapets in front of houses.

According to a senior MC official, removal of encroachments on road-berms is essential for carrying out the recarpeting of roads within the sectors, quot;however, keeping in view the residents8217; resentment, removal of encroachments in the area won8217;t be taken up tomorrow, quot; he added.

Officials said the recarpeting work has been assigned and will begin in a day or two.

The protesting Sector 7 residents said they would prefer to do without recarpetted roads if it was to be done at the cost of their hedges and other constructions. The Sector 7-C Residents Welfare Association has charged the MCC with acting quot;discriminately and without issuing any noticequot;. The association alleged that the authorities were adopting a quot;pick-and-choosequot; policy in removing encroachments, as no such action was taken in front of the houses of senior officials.

An MC official, when contacted, denied the welfare association8217;s allegation and said public announcements were made last evening appealing to the residents to remove all encroachments from the berms.

The roads committee comprising various municipal councillors specifies the roads which are to be recarpetted. Area Municipal Councillor Satinder Dhawan, when contacted, said the road was in a particularly bad shape and its recarpeting was long due. quot; But the MC should inform the residents beforehand and make them aware that recarpeting was in their interest, quot; she added.

As part of its recarpeting drive, the MC will remove encroachments in Sector 39 tomorrow.
