Gatka Cup 2025 inaugurated in Mohali; players from over 20 states participate
The 9th National Senior Gatka Championship–2025, organised by the Gatka Federation of India, was inaugurated at Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib, Mohali, with participants from over 20 states competing in the three-day event.
The 9th National Senior Gatka Championship–2025 commenced at Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib, Mohali, with participants from over 20 states. The three-day 9th National Senior Gatka Championship–2025 under the banner of Gatka Cup was inaugurated on Sunday at Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib, New Chandigarh (Mohali).
Organised by the Gatka Federation of India, the national-level event has drawn participants from more than 20 states and will continue till December 30.
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, who attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, said that preserving traditional sports is a collective responsibility. “Preserving and promoting heritage-related sports is our collective moral responsibility,” he said, adding that “a traditional sport like Gatka can survive only when opportunities are provided to learn, watch and organise such events across society”.
The championship has been dedicated to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. On the occasion, the MLA also distributed prizes and certificates to players.
Appreciating the organisers, Kulwant Singh said that such events help connect the youth with their culture, history and heritage. He also noted that the large turnout of spectators reflected continued public interest in traditional sports.
Referring to the state government’s initiatives, the MLA said that under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, steps are being taken to promote sports and support athletes, creating a conducive environment for sporting activities in Punjab. He also mentioned that welfare schemes related to health, employment and public welfare are being implemented at the grassroots level.
The MLA said that arrangements for accommodation and meals for the participating players have been made by the Gurdwara Ratwara Sahib Trust under the supervision of Baba Lakhbir Singh, describing the effort as commendable.
Among those present were Baba Lakhbir Singh, chairman of the Vishwa Gurmat Ruhani Charitable Trust, Rajinder Singh Sohal, active president of the Gatka Federation of India, office-bearers of the Gatka Association, players and sports enthusiasts.
